The Facebook videos summarize in less than 10 minutes a current topic on the non-surgical treatment of spinal deviations. The Lyon method is the oldest, but it does not ignore other methods that have been developed in Europe and that it knows well. The historical approach is the basis of the PSSE (Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercises). 
Jean Claude de Mauroy has had the opportunity over the last 50 years to participate in this history both in terms of physiotherapy and bracing.   
The monthly interactive sessions of the Lyon Method certification complete the basic training and always constitute an opening towards the PSSE.

  


Non-surgical treatment of spinal deviations is not limited to exercises and the possible use of a brace. The back school, initially developed for degenerative spinal pathologies, can be adapted to vertebral deviations and constitutes the basis of the "24 hours of back" of the Lyon Method.
The back school is part of the therapeutic education of the patient which remains the competence of the health professional and cannot be delegated. Two free 30-minute videos are available on the Pathology section of the Lyon Method website.
These videos can be used whatever the PSSE or the brace used.

 


Although there is unanimity for a 3D correction of scoliosis, the methods used are very different. The Lyon method uses 3D correction by coupled movements on two planes. To better understand the coupled movements, we used a simple biomechanical model with movements in the sagittal plane of function associated with a frontal tension asymmetry.

 


The Lyon method of non-surgical treatment of vertebral deviations was born from the experimental work of a French physiologist, Jean Pierre Flourens, who created a scoliosis in pigeons by unilateral labyrinthine destruction, whereas he expected a deafness. Since that time, discoveries associating scoliosis and anomalies of the extrapyramidal postural system have followed one another. It seems to be accepted today that the so-called idiopathic scoliosis of adolescence is associated with a delay in the maturation of the postural system (NOTOM). Vertebro-pulmonary coupling can explain scoliosis in bony fish outside of verticality.

 


The management of scoliosis from adolescence to adulthood (ASA) is very different from that of adolescents. Degenerative phenomena are much more frequent, including rotatory dislocation, a specific complication of lumbar and thoracolumbar scoliosis. Compensations are more limited and imbalances are much more marked. If mechanical realignment and adjustment of paravertebral tensions remain the main objective, they require the maintenance of lumbar lordosis. Active axial self-elongation goes in the direction of reducing thoracic kyphosis. It is also possible to make corrective braces using high-strength 3 mm polyamide 6 with instant molding in the corrected position.
